Loneliness is a feeling of being isolated, disconnected from others and generally ‘being out of circulation’. The sad thing is sometimes we could feel this way even when we are in the midst of other people. As social beings we all long to be in a circle where we feel valued, accepted and desired.
I pondered on a song playing on the radio recently and a line from the lyrics states “do you know what it feels like to be the last one to know the lock on the door has changed” I immediately identified with it. Dont we all feel like that sometimes?
Loneliness in itself could be viewed as a subjective feeling. It can hardly be shared with another. However others can do alot to make the feeling bearable if only they could be more sensitive.
Indeed, there are some good outcomes in such lonely times as one reaches deep within to unleash the creative being locked within. Or we could become depressed, resentful and have negative view of others.
Even though we can not control other persons behaviour and attitudes, we can for sure manage how we react to such feelings of loneliness. This is part of the coping strategies we all tend to adopt from time to time. Some include using defence mechanisms. Be mindful to use healthy ones like humour and sublimation instead of immature ones like denial e.t.c
Creating fun for yourself could be helpful. Reading interesting books is certainly a good one. Engaging in social activities which may open opportunities to meet other people can be helpful. Using the internet chat rooms is yet an increasingly popular way to overcome loneliness.
In all you do, don’t allow loneliness separate you from your loved ones. Make contact with others and continue to create your own fun. It is great feeling on the other hand to be there for other people. Be sensitive to the needs of other people.
I have tried to put together my thoughts and I am sure you have other tips on how to deal with loneliness. Add your comments.
